Sompraz 40 mg Tablet is a prescription acid-reducing medicine that contains 40 mg of esomeprazole in each tablet. It belongs to the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class, which lowers the amount of acid your stomach makes. How it works: Esomeprazole in Sompraz 40 mg Tablet blocks the acid pump in the stomach lining, so the stomach makes less acid. Because it is an enteric-coated tablet, it is designed to pass through the stomach and release the medicine in the intestine where it can be absorbed properly.

Sompraz 40 mg Tablet is the higher-strength sibling to Sompraz 20 mg Tablet, so it is usually chosen when a doctor wants more potent acid suppression or when symptoms are not controlled with a lower dose. It is not a different medicine, but the 40 mg strength may be preferred for more severe reflux, healing of esophageal inflammation, or maintenance therapy after a clinician review.
