Allopurinol

Allopurinol is a prescription medicine used to lower uric acid in the body. It belongs to a class of medicines called xanthine oxidase inhibitors and works by reducing the amount of uric acid your body makes.

It is commonly used to help prevent gout attacks and to manage high uric acid levels. Allopurinol is not a pain reliever for sudden gout pain, and it may not be right for everyone. Tell your healthcare provider about kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, and all other medicines you take.
