Glucobay 25 mg Tablet contains 25 mg of acarbose in each tablet. It is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor used to help control blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, usually along with diet and exercise. Glucobay 25 mg Tablet works best for lowering blood sugar rises after meals. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
How it works: Acarbose in Glucobay 25 mg Tablet slows the breakdown of carbohydrates in the intestine, so glucose enters the bloodstream more slowly after meals. Because it works in the gut rather than by making the body produce more insulin, it mainly helps with post-meal blood sugar spikes.
Glucobay 25 mg Tablet is the lower-strength Glucobay tablet, and it is often chosen when a doctor wants to start treatment gently or reduce stomach-related side effects. Compared with Glucobay 50 mg Tablet, the 25 mg strength gives a smaller dose per tablet and may be easier to tolerate when first beginning therapy or when dose increases need to be gradual.
Each Glucobay 25 mg Tablet provides 25 mg of acarbose. Your doctor decides how often you should take it, and it is commonly taken with meals up to 3 times daily, with the dose adjusted based on blood sugar response and stomach tolerance. Do not exceed the daily amount prescribed by your clinician; the exact maximum depends on your treatment plan and the strength being used.
Do not change your dose or stop the medicine without speaking to your doctor.
Common side effects of Acarbose may include:
Get medical help right away if you notice:
Store Glucobay 25 mg Tablet in its original strip or box at room temperature, away from moisture and heat, and keep it out of reach of children.
Take Glucobay 25 mg Tablet with the first bite of each main meal, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. It is meant to work with food, so it should not be taken on an empty stomach or between meals unless specifically directed.
Glucobay 25 mg Tablet is often used as a lower-strength option when a doctor wants to start acarbose gently or build up the dose slowly. Some patients stay on 25 mg if that strength is enough or if higher doses cause too much stomach upset.
Gas, bloating, stomach pain, and diarrhea are common with Glucobay 25 mg Tablet, especially when you first start it. These effects often happen because the medicine changes how carbohydrates are digested in the intestine.
If you are also taking insulin or another medicine that can cause low blood sugar, use glucose tablets or glucose gel if hypoglycemia happens. Table sugar may work more slowly while you are taking Glucobay 25 mg Tablet, so glucose is preferred.
